This painting began on a sunny afternoon in 2016. The original painting was executed fairly spontaneously. Then came the revision, which went well, except for needing one tiny correction, something with the shadows, as I recall. As will happen, especially with portraits, that one revision led to a whole host of changes, until, whoopsie, I went a little too far.
Not wanting to leave the work unfinished, for the sake of the parts that I liked, I reworked the figure more times than I can count. Over time it developed into what I think of as a sequence of images.... seen and unseen. That would have been a fitting title. What you see here is a last attempt to bring closure to this piece.To my mind, it has seen more interesting phases than the present one. I have added a partial sequence of some of the images that emerged in the evolutionary process of this work.

Morte dell'arte
Questo dipinto è iniziato in un pomeriggio soleggiato del 2016. Il dipinto originale è stato eseguito in modo abbastanza spontaneo. Poi è arrivata la revisione, che è andata bene, a parte la necessità di una piccola correzione, qualcosa con le ombre, se ricordo bene. Come succederà, soprattutto con i ritratti, quella revisione ha portato a tutta una serie di cambiamenti, finché, whoopsie, sono andato un po’ troppo oltre.
Non volendo lasciare il lavoro incompiuto, per il bene delle parti che mi piacevano, ho rielaborato la figura più volte di quanto possa contare. Nel corso del tempo si è sviluppato in quella che considero una sequenza di immagini... viste e invisibili. Sarebbe stato un titolo appropriato. Quello che vedi qui è un ultimo tentativo di concludere questo pezzo. A mio avviso ha visto fasi più interessanti di quella attuale. Ho aggiunto una sequenza parziale di alcune delle immagini emerse nel processo evolutivo di questo lavoro.
