Painting a portrait is like taking a journey into the soul of the sitter. As the work develops, with various adjustments of color and shade, the expression develops with it, often traversing a gamut of moods. Now the sitter exhibits pride, now anger, sadness, defiance.... all this on the way to an expression of tranquility, friendliness or something that reflects the best of the person.
When I painted this portrait of the late Joseph Dick, as a commemoration of his life, it was amazingly devoid of the usual drama and complexity. In as much as an artist can come to know her subject, I came to understand Joe as a gentle person. I felt in him a sincerity and simplicity that I don’t often encounter in a subject.
I painted this portrait as a gift for his family, that it may embody the fond memories of him that they share.

Dipingere un ritratto è come fare un viaggio nell'anima del soggetto. Man mano che il lavoro si sviluppa, con vari aggiustamenti di colore e tonalità, l'espressione si sviluppa con esso, spesso attraversando una gamma di stati d'animo. Ora il soggetto mostra orgoglio, ora rabbia, tristezza, sfida... tutto questo sulla strada per un'espressione di tranquillità, cordialità o qualcosa che rifletta il meglio della persona.
Quando ho dipinto questo ritratto del defunto Joseph Dick, come commemorazione della sua vita, era sorprendentemente privo del solito dramma e complessità. Per quanto un artista possa conoscere la sua materia, sono arrivato a capire Joe come una persona gentile. Ho sentito in lui una sincerità e una semplicità che non incontro spesso in un soggetto.
Ho dipinto questo ritratto come regalo per la sua famiglia, affinché possa incarnare i bei ricordi di lui che condividono.
